I didn't like Doctor Who. Saw a handful of episodes in the 60s and it just wasn't my thing. My total immersion in Who was to recognise people at comic conventions wearing a long scarf and handing out Jelly Babies to people. The American ones, the chocolate kind, not the multi coloured ones from Britain even.

Since then I watched a few Tennant episodes when a friend came visiting, and it was okay. I fell in love with Freema Agyeman which made me watch things like Law and Order: UK, even if it took me til about last week to find out I was saying her name wrong. OY.

Then they did it to me. Advertised this 50th anniversary thing on BBC America and told me that JOHN HURT was going to be in it. Okay I'd watch utter garbage if  John Hurt was in it so I watched. And dammit this stuff was GOOD. I didn't remember the five or so Tennant eps as being that good. But there was John making this stuff GOOD. So what was a gal to do?

Binge watch Who.  That's what.

So I dug into my bank account and headed to Amazon and had a decision to make. Was I going to go all the way back to day one, or was I going to start with the much more manageable new series. Too many missing episodes in the old stuff made my decision for me. So McGann and those that followed were it.

And it was seriously GOOD. McGann was lovely, Eccleston was lovlier. I mean, okay he was gorgeous and talented and Rose was kinda interesting.

Tennant was pretty good too, I'd since seen him in a bunch of other stuff, and the stories were engaging. Then Barrowman showed up. Okay not bad at all. Fun character, wait, what's this Torchwood thing. OH NO.

Back to Amazon, to buy Torchwood. Then someone told me about Sarah Jane so back again to buy the Sarah Jane adventures, which required a friend of mine to make a list in order, every single episode chronologically. So that meant, 5 Who, 2 Torchwood, 4 Sarah Jane and so on. Still not feeling the Matt Smith vibe though, but then they told me that Peter Capaldi was going to follow him, so now I have to slog through Smith and hope he gets better before the new season starts in August.

And there was this game Doctor Who Legacy. And it had the War Doctor and that made me hooked. And thus I began to search for Doctor Who Community, gaming people, people who watched the show. People who didn't think my baby adipose stress toy, or the Dalek that now runs around my desk were weird. Who cheered with me when I finally found my War Doctor sonic screwdriver was back in stock, and one who is buying me a plush talking K-9 as a gift.

And contests, oh how there are contests this one is cool. And yes I state honestly in the interest of proper public disclosure, writing this will get me more contest entries, even if I am writing the absolute truth of it. But it's true and I'm a Whovian now. All because of John. But then, not knowing a thing about Who if someone had shown me a picture of Peter Capaldi, I'd have become a Whovian for him too.

Anyway the cool contest is here if anyone wants to join in.

If you play Doctor Who Legacy it's so worth it.

As anyone who really watches White Collar knows, Willie Garson's character Mozzie Haversham (not his real name of course,) had a stuffed bear as a child named "Mozart" (he couldn't say that so he said "Mozzie.")  He likely still has this bear. Well the bear was adorkable in so many ways so I went to Build a Bear and got the bear that most looked like Mozart. I then dressed him in Mozzie like clothes. I then decided to get my gumption up and tweet a pic of the bear to Mr. Garson and to the White Collar showrunners and mark it #WhiteCollar.

The pic is on TwitPic here:

Isn't he cute?

Ladies, Gentlemen and David (may I call you David?),

I loved the hockey episode of Bones, I'm sure that David especially had a ball during the episode. However, I wish that there had been more guest stars from the Robataille Charity team. I admit it- I saw hockey, David and Mr. Robitaille listed and held my breath, looking for perhaps uncredited surprise cameos from...Oh, let's see DB Sweeney, Neal McDonough, Paul Guilfoyle (maybe not because he's under contract to a CBS show,) but you get my point.

I admit it, the only thing I really like about hockey is DB Sweeney - and I like him enough that I will watch hockey games and support hockey charities. They were all probably busy...maybe a rematch show? Another hockey case? Or just Seeley's team doing something else in an ep? Anyway...it was a cool episode.

Now, don't get me wrong, I adore Mr. Boreanaz and Bones is a very cool show, but I don't think of him when I think hockey.

But next time Snoopy gets to fire up the Zamboni to clear the ice for another hockey related Bones episode...

Thank you.

Okay, you have a charity, you're staging a big event, to raise money, you invite a bunch of people other people enjoy seeing. You raise your money. Then usually you advertise that you have done this, so people who could not go to your big event might still donate money to you. Often this is accomplished by publishing pictures of the famous people who came to help you raise money.

It's a simple concept.

Many fans like to look at these pictures and often, they  will donate money to your cause because their favourite famous person supports you. Even if they cannot afford to donate, they may propagate these pictures on fan sites and say "look who was at this event, we should support this group. Even if we can't give money, maybe there are other ways we can help, or if we get the word out, OTHER people will give."

With me so far?

This little cycle of we need money, you like pictures of your favourite people doing interesting things, you promote or support us, we give you pictures, etc... plays out perfectly every single day.

Except when it doesn't, when the fans look for pictures and can't find them. When they find a tonne of news about who is going to go to the event, but not so much about what happened AT the event.

Then the fans get annoyed. See the hot man in the avatar? His name is DB Sweeney -- he acts, he directs, he writes, he plays baseball and he plays hockey, boy does he play hockey [insert bad, silly, dated, toe pick joke of your choice here]. AND he  goes to a lot of fun charity things where famous people play hockey. Right to Play, I'm talking to you. Where are the pictures? Where are the reports? Honestly, I can barely find proof the event took place. That's just not on.

Just NOT on.

PS Someone needs to tell Mr. Sweeney the next time he stages one of his "What DOES DB stand for" routines, he should tell people the REAL truth. I mean come on, anyone with eyes can tell that what it  really stands for is "Damned Beautiful."

Was talking to a friend today, she's an incredible artist and has a bunch of actor sites. We're on a mail list together and they keep taking her pictures without even saying THANKS, let alone, OH she did this. What is UP with that?

Its the same in fanfiction. One of my favourite author pairs was just plagiarised on Fanfiction.net.. I know, people keep saying but isn't fanfiction by its NATURE plagiarism. I think there's an element of degrees there. Fanfiction is our response to  a shared mythology. We play in other people's sandboxes. But by and large we do not wholesale copy their work either. And most fans even if its only because the site they publish on requires it would not hesitate to remember to put SO AND SO CAME UP WITH THIS, and mostly when they don't they get stepped on by other fans for being stupid. So why would they think just because they're playing in someone else's house, they can steal what their playmates are doing?

It happened to my room mate, she actually wrote a story and said OKAY pass it around, just leave my disclaimer and DON'T CHANGE ANYTHING. I found it on Fanfiction.net, the characters names were changed, and other little changes had been made. THE DISCLAIMER WAS STILL THERE. and what the heck was an NC-17 story with sex and some very interesting psychological control issues going on DOING ON FFN? Its absolutely above what their TOS allows for sex stories.  People confuse me sometimes.

So, I guess this is a plea. People work on stuff. On fansites, on stories, on screen capping movies, on whatever. IT IS WORK. It takes time. Its a labour of love usually, for an actor, for an actress, for a story, for a particular movie. BUT IT IS WORK. How the hell hard is it to say, see this gorgeous picture? SHE DID IT. He did it. I got it from over here  go visit this wonderful place? The internet, even if you have to pay for a connection by the minute, usually lets you compose your writing offline, and then post it up. It doesn't take more than a second, and its the right thing to do. CREDIT PEOPLE. Credit is what its all about. Asking first would be nice too, but that may be too much for me to hope for.

/end rant? probably not.
